Research>novel wind tunnel test facilities

Grid enabled wind tunnel

Developed as part of the GEWiTTS project. The transonic wind tunnel at the Goldstein Aeronautical Laboratory at Barton was set up so that wind tunnel experiments using the SUPREMO pressure sensitive paint system developed by BAESYSTEMS could be used interactively using GRID technology. The system was successfully demonstrated live at a number of international conferences.

Transonic test bed for flow control actuators and sensors

Developed as part of the Integrated Wing project. The transonic tunnel (see above) is to be set up as facility for engineering evaluation of candidate flow control actuators and sensors for civil transport wing flow control applications

Six axis dynamic wind tunnel rig

Developed as part of the FLAVIIR project by Russel Sparks. A commercial 6dof motion platform primarily aimed at the flight simulator market has been developed for use as a 6dof dynamic platform for obtaining dynamic aerodynamic derivatives
