What are MBots?
MBot is short for Musical Robot. A musical robot is defined as any musical device that is capable of playing itself.
In the world of music, there are really only three ways of making a sound. You can either
Hit something (percussion instruments),
Blow air through or over something (wind instruments), or
Scrape something (bowed string instruments)
Consequently there are only three types of MBot required: DrumBots, WindBots and StringBots.
MBots are physical instruments that radiate acoustic energy by oscillation of structures or air columns. In contrast, samplers and other electronic instruments generate electronic waveforms that have tobe heard via loud speakers. Despite the advances in speaker design and 3-d sound technology, the experience of being in the same room as a physical musical instrument and listening to it being played is a far richer experience than listening to a recording of the same instrument.
